EVENT TWO: Silent Meeting

Lincoln School Silent Meeting

For my second event, I attended an event at my internship site, The Lincoln School in Providence, RI. Every week, each age group in the school attends a "silent meeting". Since I work in the lower school for my internship, I attended their silent meeting on a Friday afternoon. The lower school consists of ages nursery through grade 5. I found a good description of the purpose of silent meeting on the lincoln school website. It states "Each week, students in all divisions of Lincoln, from early childhood through Upper School, attend a silent meeting, where we build community together in silence. The structure of these meetings varies by age group, to ensure that students can experience and understand the practice in age-appropriate ways. For students and faculty alike, the silent meeting is a priceless opportunity to slow down, unplug, and be present in the midst of their fast-paced days." (http://www.lincolnschool.org/a-quaker-foundation/silent-meeting) I loved attending this meeting for many reasons. Although it is hard for young kids to sit in silence for ten minutes and reflect on their weeks/lives these students do such an amazing job. I loved watching some of the students close their eyes and use the time to relax. Attending this silent meeting made me think back to our times in class where we would all just sit in silence for a few minutes and reflect and relax and get ourselves ready for the day. I think providing this time for young students as well as college students is important for reflection, and building community.
