EVENT ONE: Gender Film

Forbidden: Undocumented & Queer in Rural America

For my first event, I attended a gender film titled "Forbidden: Undocumented & Queer in Rural America". This event took place on November 1st, 2017 in Gaige Hall on the Rhode Island College campus. This film was a documentary that focused on an undocumented immigrant who is also a gay man named Moises Serrano who grew up in rural North Carolina. The film focuses on the fight Moises had to face after he is forbidden to live in his country. He goes on to fight for equality for himself the other illegal immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community. While watching this film, it reminded me of our in class discussions focused around diversity and equality. It is sad to me that this is still an issue we are struggling with in 2017. The LGBTQ community has become so large and they deserve to be treated equally. I also thought back to our discussion around DACA. Watching the film made me think back to all of the people in the video we watched who have lived here for years and are scared for their future. Moises is also struggling with this in the film. It is unfair and unjust to tell immigrants that they can no longer live in the U.S even if they hold a green card. This film touched on a lot of topics we have discussed in class and I really enjoyed watching it.
