Seven Characteristics of Youth Work

The Seven Characteristics of Youth Work include; Youth work is an educational practice, Youth work is a social practice, Youth workers actively challenge inequality and work towards social justice, where possible young people choose to be involved, youth work seeks to strengthen the voice and influence of young people, youth work is a welfare practice, and youth work works with young people "holistically". Having been asked the question "what is youth development?" what feels like a million times, I can now provide them with the seven characteristics explained in the article. Being a youth worker is being an educator, but in all kinds of settings. Youth workers teach, inspire, build relationships and trust in youth. Youth workers also interact with youth through social groups. They work to understand the youth they are working with through their peer groups and social settings. The third characteristic explained in the article is something i've learned about through being apart of the YDEV community at RIC. Youth work is a community, and youth workers are always striving to better the world even if it means overcoming challenges along the way. Social justice and putting an end to inequality is something youth workers, including myself are very passionate about. The fourth characteristic, "Where possible, young people choose to be involved" describes a youth workers choice to engage with youth. Youth work takes place in multiple settings, but regardless of the setting, youth enjoys being involved when they are not obligated. Youth work empowers young people. Youth work allows young people to have a voice and empower each other, and their community. Youth work often takes place where there is greater need. This means that as youth workers it is our obligation to know interventions, and strategies to any challenges thrown our way. Lastly, youth workers choose to work with youth simply because we have a passion for working with young people. The ultimate reward to being a youth worker is being loved, respected, being the change, and most importantly giving youth a voice.
